Country/Region/City

Each FISU World University Championship is more than just a sporting event — it’s a unique opportunity to discover a new culture, explore a region, and connect with a vibrant academic community.

This page introduces you to the host country and city for this edition, highlighting their history, key features, and commitment to sport and youth.

Portugal

Portugal is a country located in the southwest of Europe, bordered by Spain to the east and north, and by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south.

Though small in size, it is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, offering an incredible variety of landscapes — from golden beaches and rugged cliffs to rolling plains and green mountains.

Once a nation of explorers, Portugal played a key role in the Age of Discoveries, connecting continents and cultures across the globe. Today, it is known as the oldest nation in Europe with defined borders, a proud member of the European Union, and the only Portuguese-speaking country in Europe.

Its capital, Lisbon, combines tradition and innovation, while Porto, in the north, is famous for its wine, architecture, and charm.

Portugal is also globally recognised for its gastronomy, hospitality, music (notably Fado), and passion for football, as well as for its pleasant climate and safe, welcoming environment.

According to the Global Peace Index, Portugal is among the top ten most peaceful countries in the world.

Figueira da Foz

Known as the Queen of the Silver Coast, Figueira da Foz is one of Portugal’s most iconic seaside destinations. Located in the center of the country, between Lisbon and Porto, the city lies where the Mondego River meets the Atlantic Ocean, offering a perfect blend of beach, culture, and natural beauty.

Figueira da Foz is famous for its wide sandy beaches, vibrant seafront promenades, and a long tradition of hospitality and leisure. The city combines the relaxed atmosphere of a coastal resort with the energy of sports and outdoor life — making it an ideal setting for the 2026 FISU World University Championship Beach Sports.

Beyond its beaches, visitors can explore Serra da Boa Viagem’s viewpoints and trails, the historic Casino Figueira, and enjoy local cuisine that celebrates the fresh flavours of the Atlantic.

With its mild climate, welcoming community, and passion for sport, Figueira da Foz promises an unforgettable experience for all participants and guests.

University of Coimbra

Founded in 1290, the University of Coimbra is one of the oldest universities in the world and a proud symbol of Portugal’s academic tradition. Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, its historic campus overlooks the city of Coimbra, offering an inspiring setting where knowledge, culture, and innovation come together.

The University of Coimbra has a long-standing commitment to education, research, and community development, while also playing a key role in promoting university sports nationally and internationally.

Through its student’s association, the AAC (Associação Académica de Coimbra), it supports a wide range of disciplines and has contributed to the growth of the FISU movement in Portugal.

With centuries of academic excellence and a vibrant student life, the University of Coimbra continues to be a reference in higher education and university sports, representing the perfect bridge between tradition, youth, and global engagement.
